What are uses of WiMax technology?

- The WiMax technology has been used since a long time to provide assistance to the communication process.
- This area has seen major deployment of wimax technology especially in Indonesia during the calamity of tsunami in the year of 2004.
- The WiMax technology brought in the possibilities of providing broadband access that helped a big deal in regeneration of the communication.
- The organizations such as FEMA and FCC (federal communications commission) felt the need of wimax in their communication process.
- The WiMax applications with high efficiency are available today.
- It is known to offer a broad base for the customers and the services had been improved by adding mobility feature to them.
- The service providers use the WiMax technology for providing various services such as mobile and Internet access, voice, video and data.
There are other advantages of using wimax technology.
- You get to save a lot of prospective cost and at the same time you get efficiency in services.
- It is even capable of allowing the video making, VOIP calling and data transfers at high speeds.
- The mobile community has been upgraded so much with the coming of the WiMax technology.
- However, there are three main applications offered by WiMax namely backhaul, consumer connectivity and business.
- The real augmentation has been drawn to communications through WiMax technology because of which they can benefit both from the data transmission and video apart from voice.
- This has facilitated quick response from the applications as per the situation.
- A temporary communication services can be deployed by a client using WiMax technology.
- It can even speed up the network according to the circumstances and events.
- This has got us access to visitors, employees and media on a temporary basis.
- If we are located in the range of the tower, it is quite easy for us to gain access to the equipment of the premises of for the events.

The factors that make the wimax technology so powerful are the following:
> high bandwidth
> high quality services
> security
> deployment
> full duplex consisting of DSL
> reasonable cost

For some applications, the wimax technology is used exclusively as in the following:

1. A means of connecting for the small and medium sized businesses.  - This technology has enabled these businesses to progress day by day.
- The connectivity offered by WiMax technology is good enough to attract clients.
- It then provides them a number of services such as that of hotspots and so on.
- Therefore, this application has gotten into spot light.

2. Backhaul
- The most important application of the WiMax technology is the range.
- This is so because using WiMax tower can be used as a means to connect with the other WiMax towers through line-of-sight communication which involves using microwave links.
- This connectivity between two towers is called as backhaul.
- It is capable of covering up to 3000 miles.
- The WiMax network is even sufficient for covering remote and rural areas.

3. The nomadic broadband is another application of wimax technology which can be considered as an extended plan of wifi.
- The access points provided by WiMax technology might be less in number but they offer very high security.
- Many companies use the WiMax base station for the development of the business.

Explain the various File Access methods?

One of the most important functions of the mainframe operating system is the access methods that make it possible for you to access the data from external devices such as the tape or disk.

What are access methods?

- Access methods are very useful in providing an API for transferring the data from one device to another.
- Another best thing about this API was that it worked as the device driver for the operating systems on non-mainframe computers.
- There have been a lot of reasons behind the introduction of the access methods.
- A special program had to be written for the I/O channel and there has to be a processor entirely dedicated to controlling the access to the peripheral storage device as well as data transfer from and to the physical memory.
- Special instructions constitute these channel programs and are known as the CCWs or the channel command words.
- To write such programs, very detailed knowledge is required regarding the characteristics of the hardware.

Benefits of File Access Methods

There are 3 major benefits of the file access methods:
Ø  Ease of programming: The programmer does not have to deal with the procedures of the specific devices, recovery tactics and error detection. A program designed to process a particular thing will do it no matter where the data has been stored.
Ø  Ease of hardware replacement: A program cannot be altered by the programmer during the migration of data from older to newer model of the storage device provided the same access methods are supported by the new model.
Ø  Ease in sharing the data set access: The access methods can be trusted for managing the multiple accesses to the same file. At the same it ensures the security of the system and data integrity.

Some File/Storage Access Methods

Ø  Basic direct access method (BDAM)
Ø  Basic sequential access method (BSAM)
Ø  Queued sequential access method (QSAM)
Ø  Basic partitioned access method (BPAM)
Ø  Indexed sequential access method (ISAM)
Ø  Virtual storage access method (VSAM)
Ø  OAM (object access method)

- For dealing with the records of a data set both the types of access i.e., the queued and the basic are suitable.
- The queued access methods are an improvement of the basic file access methods.
- Read ahead scheme and internal blocking of data is well supported by these methods.
- This allowed combining the multiple records in to one unit, thus increasing the performance.
- In sequential methods, it is assumed that there’s only a sequential way for processing the records which is just the opposite of the direct access methods.
- There are devices like the magnetic tape that only enforce the sequential access
- Sequential access can be used for writing a data set and then later the direct manner can be used for processing it.

Today we have access methods that are network-oriented such as the following:
Ø  Basic telecommunications access method or BTAM
Ø  Queued tele – processing access method or QTAM
Ø  Telecommunications access method or TCAM
Ø  Virtual telecommunications access method or VTAM

- The term access method was used by the IMS or the IBM information management system for referring to the methods for manipulation of the database records.
- The access methods used by them are:
Ø  GSAM or generalized sequential access method
Ø  HDAM or hierarchical direct access method
Ø  HIDAM or hierarchical indexed direct access method
Ø  HISAM or hierarchical indexed sequential access method
Ø  HSAM or hierarchical sequential access method
Ø  PHDAM or partitioned hierarchical direct access method
Ø  PHIDAM or partitioned hierarchical indexed direct access

Open up the feature planning and tracking to the team for improvements ..

In the previous post on this topic (Risk planning by looking at confidence level of estimates), I talked about the difficulties posed due to discrepancies between the original estimates done at the time of planning, vs. the actual efforts spent on the work when the features are in development. Tracking these discrepancies and working out some kind of logic about these discrepancies is very important for the project manager. Typically, the estimation is done by the senior folks on the team while the person who works on a specific feature can be anyone on the team (if the work is specialized, then it would be allocated to somebody who has more experience in that area, but that person could still be different from the person who did the actual estimation).
So what do you do ? Well, you would typically track the estimation against the effort, and try to figure out whether there is some kind of logic. Sometimes, there is a possibility of generating some logic to figure this out. We had a case whereby the person who preparing the estimates had a person situation during the time that he was working on the estimations which was very distracting (but not enough that the Project Manager could figure out that here was a problem). So, soon after the actual work started, some data analysis about the discrepancies resulted in figuring out that the actual effort was about 25% more than the estimates where this particular person was involved, and this helped us in re-estimating the remaining features and also making a decision that a particular feature needed to be stripped down, the scope of the feature reduced for getting everything in the time frame.
However, what was interesting was that this logic was actually seen by a member of the team who pointed this out, and though it seemed a bit strange at first, more analysis helped. Some speaking to the people who had already worked on the features that this person estimated tended to confirm that they believed that the features were under-estimated. What this incident showed was that this provided us (the leads and the project manager) that we should get the team more involved with the risk planning and analysis that we do, such that sometimes it would be possible for them to identify a pattern that we might miss. There were other smaller cases that we could see.
One problem that was told to us before we started was that it was supposed that this would distract the team members from their regular work, and, many of them might not be interested in being involved in such kind of analysis. We did find people who were not interested, but we did start out with the entire team, making them involved with the process we did for identification of risk factors, gathering the data and then doing the analysis. About the time it took to do this, we figured that overall this would take an hour per week, but getting team members involved with stuff such as this would help give them a better perspective on some important processes that team leaders go through and when they could see the problem, they had a closer perspective on some of these risks and could figure out solutions for a percentage of these cases faster than we could. This helped save time overall, and after a couple of rounds, the people who elected to remain involved were appreciative of the learning they got from such exercises.

What is hard disk and what is its purpose?

- HDD or Hard Disk Drive is for data storage.
- It is used for storage and retrieval of the digital information or data that is stored on it.
- The data is stored or retrieved by means of its discs that rotate rapidly.

Hard Disk and its Purpose

- These discs are known as the platters and are coated with some sort of magnetic material.
- The major characteristic as well as benefit of hard disk drives is that they retain the data even when the power supply is switched off.
- From hard disk, the data can be read in a manner of random access.
- This means that the storing and retrieval of the individual blocks of the data can be done either sequentially or in any order that the user may like.
- A hard disk may consist of one or more than one of those rigid platters.
- These rotating discs have magnetic heads that are located on an actuator arm that is continuously moving and reads and writes data on their surfaces.
- IBM was the first to introduce the hard disk in the year of 1956.
- Hard disk drives are the most dominant and the prominent secondary storage device for the computers since 1960s.
- Since then, it has been continuously improved.
- The HDD units are produced by more than 200 companies; among them most prominent developers are Toshiba, Seagate, Western digital etc.

HDD’s primary characteristics are:
Ø  Capacity and
Ø  Performance
- The former is specified in terms of the unit prefixes.
- In some systems, the capacity of the hard disk drive might be unavailable to the user since being used by the operating system and the file system and may have a possibility of occurrence of redundancy.
- The latter is specified in terms of the movements of the heads for a file i.e., the average access time in addition to the time taken for moving the file under the head i.e., the average latency and data rate.

HDDs are available in two most common factors namely:
Ø  3.5 inch for desktop computers
Ø  2.5 inch for laptops

HDDs might be connected to the system by any of the following standard interface cables:
Ø  Serial ATA or SATA cable
Ø  USB cable
Ø  Serial attached SCSI or SAS cable

- In the year of 2012, flash memory emerged as a tough primary competitor for the hard disk drives.
- These flash memories are some sort of solid state drives or SSDs.
- However, the HDDs will still continue to dominate the secondary storage for its advantages such as price per unit of storage and recording capacity.

- But there is a different scenario is the case of portable electronics.
- Here, the flash drives are considered to be more useful then rotating HDDs because here the durability and physical size of the drive has also to be considered more when compared to price and capacity.
HDD uses the magnetic recording technology where the data is recorded by magnetizing a thin film of material that is typically ferromagnetic on a disk.
- The binary data bits are represented by the sequential change in the direction of the magnetization.
- An encoding scheme is used for encoding the user data.
- An example of such encoding scheme run – length limited encoding.
- It is these schemes that determine how the magnetic transitions would represent the data.

The latest HDD technologies are:
Ø  Shingled write
Ø  CPP/ MGR heads
Ø  Heat assisted magnetic recording
Ø  Bit – patterned recording

What are the risks and liabilities with instant messaging?

There are a number of risks and liabilities associated with Instant Messaging. Till today several attempts have been done in order to create a unified IM standard.
Few have been mentioned below:
  1. Session initiation protocol or SIP of IETF.
  2. SIP for instant messaging and presence leveraging extensions or SIMPLE.
  3. APEX or application exchange.
  4. IMPP or instant messaging and presence protocol.
  5. XMPP or open XML – based extensible messaging and presence protocol.
  6. Instant messaging and presence service of open mobile alliance (this one was developed exclusively for the mobiles.)
Although a number of benefits are given by instant message, there are also many risks and liabilities associated with it. This happens particularly when one uses IM at his/ her workplace.
Associated risks and liabilities are:
  1. Security risks
  2. Inappropriate use
  3. Compliance risks
  4. Trade secret leakage

About Security Risks

- Security risks involve infecting the systems with viruses, worms, spyware and Trojans etc.
- Hackers and crackers make use of IM vectors for making phishing attempts, introducing the file attachments laden with virus and poisoned URLs.
- Two main methods are used by the hackers for delivering the malicious code via instant messaging:
  1. Delivering viruses, spyware or Trojan horses through an infected file.
  2. Using the socially engineered text that has a web address enticing the recipient to go to an URL that in turn connects him/ her to a malicious website.
- The first kind of means i.e., the Trojans, worms and viruses propagate themselves by infecting the whole contact list of the user.
- An attack done through means of a poisoned URL may infect 1000s of user’s system in a very short duration i.e., just when each of the person in the user’s contact list receives a message that appears to be from a trusted source.
- Thus, when the recipients click on the web address, the whole cycle repeats. - Such infections might be for some criminal or a nuisance reasons.
- These attacks are getting more sophisticated with time.
- The connections in the instant messaging are usually in plain text.
- This is what that makes them vulnerable to threats such as eavesdropping.
- Also, with instant messaging, the UDP ports are left exposed to the world inviting many potential security vulnerabilities and raising many security issues.

About Inappropriate Use

- All the organizations, be of any type need protection against the liability of the inappropriate use of the IM service by the employees.
- The nature of the IM, be it immediate, informal or anonymous marks it as an abuse of the workplace.
- In a number of nations, a legal responsibility has been set up by the corporations in order to make sure that the working environment is free of any harassment for the employees.
- Instant messaging is now included as an integral part of the policies of the companies regarding the appropriate use of services such as e – mail and world wide web and some other corporate assets.

About Compliance Risks

- Using the IM services at workplace also induces a risk concerning the non – compliance to laws and regulations that govern the use of electric communications.
- The need for the production of the archived business communications that would satisfy the judicial requests is what to which most of the common regulations is related to.
- There are a number of IM communications falling under the category of business communications and are retrievable.

What are benefits of instant messaging?

Instant messaging comes with both risks and benefits. Here we focus up on its benefits.

Benefits of Instant Messaging

  1. IM serves to be of great advantage in the environments that are geographically dispersed. The major benefit here is that it cut downs on the cost of expensive phone calls.
  2. The communication channels can be augmented with the help of instant messaging. This will become clear from the following: suppose there is a conversation going between an external client and the team members can converse within themselves using IM for clarification of some points or plotting a strategy. Here, the IM is said to serve as a back channel.
  3. IM serves as an efficient tool for clearing up the clutter on desktop and lets you respond immediately. Most of the business processes are time sensitive: problem resolution, crisis management, customer service etc. to name a few. IM is the solution for all these processes.
  4. IM serves well in case of an emergency. The critical information can be rapidly disseminated to the whole company or individuals in cases such as that of health issues. Natural catastrophes, schedule changes, or network outages etc. most of the times, the network of IM services works well when most of other e – mail and phone networks are down.
  5. A number of work groups can be linked through IM. Thus, it acts as a bonding between the two groups. The productivity of the ad-hoc contacts can be increased by enabling them to be quickly added to some work group.
  6. IM services can also be used for routing the IMs to cell phones through the IM – to – SMS (short messaging service) gateway services. An example of such a service is find – me service.
  7. Through IM services people have a quick reach to the experts if they want to survey multiple consultants or to have an instant consultation.
  8. IM is a sort of self–service. People can place queries to the human resource virtual agents via person to machine IM services for obtaining information regarding enrollments or benefits. This also provides the staff with access to the data and speeds up the business processes.

More about Intant Messaging

- IM is one of the few small things that are a must for the effective communication
- However, IM is embraced as a useful utility at workplace by some owners of small businesses.
- IM services have been used to completely replace the traditional methods of communications or to provide support them.
- IM is also a real – time means for communication.
- But the text records of the IM conversations are kept by the exchange just as in the case of e–mail messages.
- This lets the IM function as a quick conference call without having the employees leave their desks.
- It acts as a powerful means for bringing all the people on a web page common to all.
- IM is an effective tool for conducting group chat.
- Nowadays, such IM platforms that allow for group text chatting.
- Plus, they also allow you to save the chat history.
- Team members that are at some off- site locations can be connected through IM.
- Through IM it becomes easy to stay connected and archive files.

What is meant by Dynamic Virtual Private Network?

Dynamic virtual private network or DVPN is a network used for interconnecting various virtual application networks.
- These networks reduce the need for manual configuration by a large percentage (almost by 93 %).
- Dynamic virtual private networks help a great deal in the simplification of the wide area connectivity spread across a virtual application network.
- These networks have a great complexity when compared to the other networks.
- Further, they prove useful in establishing interconnections between various campuses, data centers, and offices and so on via IPsec VPN encryption.
- The solution offered by the DVPNs is quite scalable, simple and secure.
- The dynamic virtual private networks are highly automated and therefore provide a simple management solution.
- A DVPN can scale up to 1000 – 3000 sites on a single router.
- All these sites together constitute the domain of the DVPN.
- So it is obvious that a very large network can be scaled via multiple DVPNs.
- The best thing about these DVPNs is that they support all the WAN technologies and therefore can be implemented up on all.
- Furthermore, they offer flexibility in reducing the cost when compared to the lower cost broadband access.
- All the network operations are simplified since DVPN has automated VPN setup plus provisioning.
- DVPNs offer high resilience without adding to the complexity of the network.
- Another characteristic feature of a dynamic virtual private network is its carrier agnostic connectivity.
- One solution to DVPN is offered by HP that has got the following features:
  1. Full mesh or hub – spoke configuration
  2. Encryption based up on IPsec standards.
  3. The control plane and the data plane have been separated to ensure scalability.
  4. Up to 30,000 clients are supportable by the VAM (VPN address management) server.
  5. Offers zero touch configuration.
- Another solution is offered by the Juniper networks.
- Juniper’s DVPN is more of a client-less solution and has been designed for ‘remote access’ IPsec VPN.
- The delivery of the client to the end users is made dynamically from SRX.
- The remote access is simplified by DVPN since it provides the users the facility to secure the IPsec VPN tunnels without any need for configuring the VPN settings on their systems.
- This whole process comes in to when the users login to the server’s web site. - Juniper’s DVPN solution can be licensed to 5, 10, 25 or 50 concurrent users.
- It supports windows xp and above versions (both 32 and 64 bit).
- However, there are certain limitations for this solution:
  1. It requires an external RADIUS server for providing an IP address and for XAUTH.
  2. Does not support shared IKE id.
  3. Mandatory PFS (perfect forward secretary).
  4. Requires custom IKE/ IPsec security proposals.
  5. Only IKE – id supported is the FQDN.
- Configuration for DVPN is required only on the SRX gateway.
- Dynamic virtual private network is more of an intranet enabler whose purpose is to complement the regular services offered by the internet by adding more services as well as resources to it.
- One major feature of these networks is that they have an excellent ability of loading balance on – the – fly allocation of the resources.
- These networks are more popular in businesses since they offer more security by means of packet encryption protocols.
- Self – modification is possible for the DVPNs and so they are able to recognize the added nodes without help from routers.
- Encryption and authentication are two technologies used by DVPNs for securing packing data and delivering across the networks.
- Until the data reaches it destination it remains unpacked or encapsulated.
- For reaching the remote networks tunneling is used.

What are benefits of agile process improvement?

Agile methodologies that we have today are a resultant of the experiences gained from the real life projects that were undertaken by the leading software professionals. These professionals were thorough with the challenges and limitations imposed by the traditional development methodologies on various projects.

- The agile process improvement directly addresses the issues of the traditional development methods both in terms of processes and philosophy behind it.
- Agile process improvement provides a simple framework to the development teams suiting varying scenarios while focusing up on the fast delivery of the business values.
- With all these benefits of the agile process improvements, the organizations have been able to reduce the associated overall risk with the development of the project.
- The delivery of the initial business values is accelerated well by the agile process improvement.
- This is achieved through a process of constant planning and feedback.
- Agile process improvement ensures that the business values are maximized throughout the development process.
- With the API’s iterative planning plus feedback loop, it becomes possible for teams to align the software process with the business needs as required.
- Another major benefit of the agile process is that the software development process can adapt to the ever–changing requirements of the process and business.
- By taking a measure and evaluation of the status based up on the amount of work and testing done, visibility can be obtained to a more accurate value.
- The final result of the agile process improvement is a software system that is capable of addressing the customer requirements and the business in a much better way.
- By following an agile process improvement program, not only just deployable, tested and working software can be delivered on an incremental basis but also increased visibility, adaptability and values are delivered earlier in the software development life cycle.
- This proves to be a great thing in reducing the risk associated with the project.
- There are a number of problems with the traditional development methods.
- In a research it was found that the waterfall style development methodology was the major factor in the contribution of failure of the software.
- Some other software could not meet the real needs.
- They had the inability in dealing with the changing requirements and late integration.
- All this has proven that the traditional development methods prove to be risky as well as a costly way for building software.
- Thus the majority of the industry has turned towards agile development.
- There is a continuous feedback input from the customers and a face to face communication among all the stake holders.
- The business needs associated with the agile process improvement are ever changing.
- Organizations want quick results from what they invest.
- They want their improvement programs to keep pace with these changing business needs.
- The agile process improvement is composed of several mechanisms using which all this can be achieved.
- Working iteratively lets you deliver the product before the deadline to the customer.
- It lets you deliver only the things are actually required i.e., it does not let you waste your time on the un-required things.
- Also, early and regular feedback from the customer lets you deliver the product with quality as desired by the customer.
- Agile projects are distributive in nature i.e., the work is divided among people.
- Agile software development is still an immature process and there is a need for improving it for the betterment of the software industry.
- Agile process improvement is one way to do this.
