What is WiMax technology?

Worldwide inter-operability for microwave access or wimax is standard developed for wireless communications that has been designed so as to deliver data rates of 30-40 mbps. The update in the technology in the year 2011 upgraded the technology to provide around 1 gbps for the stations that were fixed.
- The Wimax forum is responsible for naming the technology as Wimax.
- This forum was formed in the year of 2001 for the promotion of the inter-operability and conformity of this standard.
- The Wimax has been defined by the forum as the technology based up on standards that enable the last mile wireless broadband delivery as alternative for the DSL and the cable thing.
- The IEEE 802/ 16’s interoperability implementations are referred to as the WiMax.
- The wimax forum has ratified this family of standards.
- By virtue of the certification provided by this forum, the vendors are able to sell mobile and fixed products that are wimax certified.
- This is done for ensuring that a level of inter-operability is maintained at par with the other products that have been also certified for the same profile.
- The ‘fixed wimax’ is the name given to the original IEEE 802.16 standards.
- ‘Wifi on steroids’ is the term used to refer to WiMax sometimes.

It has got a number of applications such as in:
Ø  Broadband connections
Ø  Cellular back-haul
Ø  Hot spots and so on.

- This technology shares some similarity with the Wifi technology however, this one is more capable of transmitting data at greater distances.
It is because of its range and bandwidth that the WiMax is suitable for the following applications:
Ø  Provides services such as the IPTV services and VoIP (telecommunications services).
Ø  Provides mobile broadband connectivity that is portable across the cities and countries and that can be accessed via different kinds of devices.
Ø  Provides an alternative for DSL and cable in the form of wireless last mile broadband access.
Ø  Acts as a source of internet connectivity.
Ø  Metering and smart grids.

- This technology can be used at home for providing internet access across the countries.
- This has also caused a rise in the market competition.
- The WiMax is even economically feasible.
- Mobile wimax has been used as a replacement for the technologies like CDMA, GSM that are cellular phone technologies.
- The technology has also been used as an overlay for increasing the capacity.
- The fixed wimax is now used for 2g, 3g and 4g networks as a wireless back-haul technology in almost all the nations whether they are developed or developing.
- In some states of North America, this technology is provided through a numbered of copper wire line connections.
- On the other hand, the technology is back hauled via satellites in case of the remote cellular operations.
- While in other cases even microwave Links are used.
- The bandwidth requirements of the WiMAX demand more substantial back-haul when compared to other legacy cellular applications.
- In some of the cases, the sites have been aggregated by the operators by use of Wireless Technology.
- The traffic is then introduced to the fiber networks as per the convenience.
- The technologies that provide triple play services are directed compatible with the WiMAX.
- These services might include multi-casting and quality of service.
- WiMax has been widely used for providing assistance in the communications.
- The Intel Corporation has donated the hardware for WiMax technology for assisting the FCC (federal communications commission) and FEMA etc.
- The subscribers’ stations or SS are the devices which are used for connecting to a WiMAX Network.
- These devices might be portable such as the following:
      > Handsets and smart phones
      > PC peripheral such as USB dongles, PC Cards and so on.
      > Embedded devices in notebooks.

What is meant by Quality of Service provided by network layer?

- The QoS or the quality of service is such a parameter that refers to a number of aspects of computer networks, telephony etc.
- This parameter allows transportation of traffic as per some specific requirements.
- Technology has advanced so much now computer networks can also be doubled up as the telephone networks for doing audio conversations.
- The technology even supports the applications which have strict service demands.
- The ITU defines the quality of service in telephony.
It covers all the requirements concerning all the connection’s aspects such as the following:
Ø  Service response time
Ø  Loss
Ø  Signal – to – noise ratio
Ø  Cross – talk
Ø  Echo
Ø  Interrupts
Ø  Frequency response
Ø  Loudness levels etc.

- The GoS (grade of service) requirement is one subset of the QoS and consists of those aspects of the connection that relate to its coverage as well as capacity.
- For example, outage probability, maximum blocking probability and so on.
- In the case of the packet switched telecommunication networks and computer networking, the resource reservation mechanisms come under the concept of traffic engineering.
- QoS can be defined as the ability by virtue of which the different applications, data flows and users can be provided with different priorities.
- It is important to have QoS guarantees if the capacity of the network is quite insufficient.
- For example, voice over IP, IP-TV and so on.
- All these services are sensitive to delays, have fixed bit rates and have limited capacities.
- The protocol or network supporting the QoS might agree up on some traffic contract with the network node’s reserve capacity and the software.
- However, the quality of service is not supported by the best effort services.
-Providing high quality communication over such networks provides a alternative to the QoS control mechanisms that are complex.
- This happens when the capacity is over-provisioned so much that it becomes sufficient for the peak traffic load that has been expected.
- Now since the network congestion problems have been eliminated, the QoS mechanisms are also not required.
- It might be sometimes be taken as the level of the service’s quality i.e., the GoS.
- For example, low bit error probability, low latency, and high bit rate and so on.
- QoS can also be defined as a metric that reflects up on the experienced quality of the service.
- It is the cumulative effect that can be accepted.
Certain types of the network traffic require a defined QoS such as the following:
Ø  Streaming media such as IPTV (internet protocol television), audio over Ethernet, audio over IP etc.
Ø  Voice over IP
Ø  Video conferencing
Ø  Telepresence
Ø  iSCSI, FCoE tec. Storage applications
Ø  safety critical applications
Ø  circuit emulation service
Ø  network operations support systems
Ø  industrial control systems
Ø  online games

- All the above mentioned services are examples of the inelastic services and a certain level of latency and bandwidth is required for them to operate properly. - On the other hand, the opposite kind of services such as the elastic services can work with any level of bandwidth and latency.
- An example of these type of services is the bulk file transfer application based up on TCP.
- A number of factors affect the quality of service in the packet switched networks.
- These factors can be broadly classified in to two categories namely technical and the human factors.
The following factors are counted as the human factors:
Ø  reliability
Ø  scalability
Ø  effectiveness
Ø  maintainability
Ø  grade of service and so on.

- ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) or GSM like voice transmissions in the circuit switched networks have QoS in their core protocol.

What are the services provided to upper layers by transport layer?

In the field of computer networking, the purpose of the 4th layer or the transport layer is to provide services for the end to end communication for the various operating applications. The services are provided within an architectural framework that consists of protocols and the components and is layered. It also offers convenient services such as the following:
Ø  Connection – oriented data stream support
Ø  Reliability
Ø  Flow control
Ø  Multiplexing and so on.

- Both the OSI (open systems interconnection) and TCP/ IP model include the transport layer.
- The foundation of the internet is based up on the TCP/ IP model whereas for the general networking, the OSI model is followed.
- However, the transport layer is defined differently in both of these models. Here we shall discuss about the transport layer in the TCP model since it is used for keeping the API (application programming interface) convenient to the internet hosts.
- This is in contrast with the definition of the transport layer in the OSI model.
- TCP (transmission control protocol) is the most widely used transport protocol and so the internet protocol suite has been named after it i.e., the TCP/ IP.
- It is a connection-oriented transmission protocol and so it is quite complex.
- This is also because it incorporates reliable data stream and transmission services in to its state-ful design.
- Not only TCP there are other protocols in the same category such as the SCTP (stream control transmission protocol) and DCCP (datagram congestion control protocol).

Now let us see what all services are provided by the transport layer to its upper layers:
ØConnection-oriented communication: It is quite easy for the application for interpreting the connection as a data stream instead of having to cope up with the connectionless models that underlie it. For example, internet protocol (IP) and the UDP’s datagram protocol.
Ø Byte orientation: Processing the data stream is quite easy when compared with using the communication system format for processing the messages. Because of such simplification, it becomes possible for the applications to work up on message formats that underlie.
Ø  Same order delivery: Usually, it is not guaranteed by the transport layer that the data packets will be received in the same order in which they were sent. But this is one of the desired features of the transport layer. Segment numbering is used for incorporating this feature. The data packets are thus passed on to the receiver in order. Head of line blocking is a consequence of implementing this.
Ø  Reliability: During the transportation some data packets might be lost because of errors and problems such as network congestion. By using error detection mechanism such as CRC (cyclic redundancy check), the data might be checked by the transport protocol for any corruption and for the verification whether the correct reception of the data by either sending a NACK or an ACK signal to the sending host. Some schemes such as the ARR (automatic repeat request) are sometimes used for the retransmission of the corrupted or the lost data.
Ø  Flow control: The rate with which the data is transmitted between two nodes is managed for preventing a sending host with a fast speed from the transmission of data more than what the receiver’s data buffer can take at a time. Otherwise it might cause a buffer overrun.

Ø  Congestion avoidance: Traffic entry in to the network can be controlled by means of congestion control by avoiding congestive collapse. The network might be kept in a state of congestive collapse by automatic repeat requests.

Application areas of leaky bucket algorithm and token bucket algorithm

In this article we discuss about the applications of the leaky bucket algorithm and the token bucket algorithm.

Applications of Leaky Bucket Algorithm
- The leaky bucket algorithm is implemented in different versions.
- For example, the generic cell rate algorithm is a version of this algorithm which is often implemented in the networks using ATM (asynchronous transfer mode).
- The algorithm is applied at the user interfaces in the usage/network parameter control in order to provide protection to the network from the problems of congestive collapse or excess traffic.
- An algorithm equivalent to the generic cell rate algorithm might be used in shaping the transmissions made by the network interface card to a network using ATM.
There are two major applications of the leaky bucket algorithm.
- The first is using it as a counter only for checking whether the events or the traffics confirm to the defined limits or not.
- Whenever a packet arrives at the check point, the counter is incremented.
- This is same as adding water to the bucket in an intermittent way.
- In the same way, the counter is decremented as the water leaks out at a constant rate.
- Because of this, the conformance of the packet to the burstiness and bandwidth limits is indicated by the value of this counter whenever a packet arrives.
- Or if an event occurs, the counter checks whether it confirms to the peak and average rate limits.
- So, when the packets arrive or an event occurs, water is added to the bucket and then leaks out. We call this version of the leaky bucket algorithm as a meter.
- Another application of the leaky bucket algorithm involves its use as queue implemented for controlling the flow of traffic.
- This queue maintains a direct control over the flow.
- When the packets arrive, they are put in to the queue.
- This is same as adding water to the bucket.
- The packets are then removed in the order they arrived at a constant rate.
- This is same as water leaking out.
- As a result of this, there is no jitter or burstiness in the traffic flow.

Applications of Token Bucket Algorithm
- The token bucket algorithm finds its application in the telecommunications and packet switched computer networks.
- This algorithm is implemented for checking whether the data transmissions confirm to the burstiness and bandwidth predefined limits.
- The token bucket algorithm used in traffic policing and traffic shaping.
- In the former, the packets that are non-conformant are discarded or assigned low priorities.
- This is done for the management of the downstream traffic.
- On the other hand, the packets are kept in delay unless they are conformed in traffic shaping.
- Both of these are used in protecting the network against the burstiness of the traffic.
- Bursty traffic gives rise to congestion problems.
- These algorithms help in managing the bandwidth as well congestion of the network.
- Network interfaces commonly use the traffic shaping process for preventing the discarding of the transmissions by the network’s traffic management functions.
- This algorithm is based up on the analogy of a bucket with fixed capacity.
- Tokens are added to this bucket at a fixed rate and represent a single packet of a fixed size.
- When the packet has to be checked whether it confirms to the predefined limits or not, first the bucket is checked if it contains sufficient tokens.
- If sufficient tokens are there, tokens equal to the number of bytes in the packet are removed and the packet is transmitted.
- If sufficient tokens are not there, the packet is said to be non-conformant and the number of tokens in the bucket remain unchanged.

What are applications of flooding algorithm?

- Flooding algorithm and its many other variants are used as material distributing algorithm.
- This algorithm distributes the messages to all the hosts in the entire graph.
- This algorithm since it acts like a flood and therefore has been named so.
- In this simple yet useful distribution or routing algorithm, every packet that a node receives is transmitted to every other outgoing link.
This algorithm is available in many variants but in every variant the following two things are common:
1. Each node acting as receiver and transmitter.
2. Each node responsible for forwarding received message to all its neighboring nodes except the one from which the message came.
- Thus, the messages are eventually delivered to the hosts spread across the network.
- Flooding algorithm might have been more useful if it would have been more complex.
- Also, then it would have been possible to avoid the duplicate messages and infinite loops that occur because of them.

Applications of Flooding Algorithm

In this article we list some of the application of the flooding algorithm.
1. Used in computer networking
2. Used in graphics
3. These algorithms are quite useful for solving numerous mathematical problems such as the maze problems.
4. Used for solving problems in the graph theory.
5. Used in systems which make use of bridging.
6. Used in systems like usenet.
7. Implemented in peer – to – peer file sharing
8. Flooding algorithms are often implemented as a part of some of the routing protocols as in OSPF, DVMRP and so on.
9. It is also used in the protocols used in the ad hoc wireless networks.
10.There is a variant of flooding algorithm called the selective flooding which is capable on addressing various issues of flooding algorithm partially by allowing the packets to be sent only in the appropriate right direction. The packets are not sent on each and every line.
11. Another variant of the flooding algorithm called the similarity algorithm is used graph matching algorithm.
- This variant of the flooding algorithm is quite versatile and has got an application in the schema matching.
- Matching the contents of the two data schemas has got an important role to play in many biochemical applications, e – business and other data warehousing applications etc.
- The similarity flooding algorithm is based on a computation that is fixed and can be used across a number of scenarios.
- Two graphs are passed to the algorithm as the input parameters.
- These graphs might be of catalogs, schemas or even data structures etc.
- The algorithm then produces a mapping between the corresponding nodes of the two graphs as output.
- It depends on the goal of the matching what subset of the mapping has to be chosen using filters.
- After the algorithm has been executed, a human tester is expected is expected to check and verify the results.
- The results might be adjusted by the tester if required.
- In this method, the accuracy of the algorithm is evaluated by number of the adjustments that are necessary.
- In some cases, an accuracy metric might be used for the estimation of the labor savings that could be obtained by the users by means of this similarity flooding algorithm for obtaining a first matching pair.
- Finally, this algorithm can be deployed as an operator of very high level in a test bed that has been implemented for the management of the output mappings and the information models.
- There are different types of matching problems and thus each type requires following a different approach.
- For example, the relational schemas can only be matched using SQL data types.

What are Real-time operating systems?

- The RTOS or a real time operating system was developed with the intention of serving the application requests that occur in real time.
- This type of operating system is capable of processing the data as and when it comes in to the system.
- This it does without making any buffering delays.
- The time requirements are processed in 10ths of seconds or even on much smaller scale.
- A key characteristic feature of the real operating system is that the amount of time they take for accepting and processing a given task remains consistent.
- The variability is so less that it can be ignored totally.

Real time operating systems also there are two types as stated below:
  1. The soft real –time operating system: It produces more jitter.
  2. The hard real – time operating system: It produces less jitter when compared to the previous one.
- The real time operating systems are driven by the goal of giving guaranteed hard or soft performance rather than just producing a high throughput.
- Another distinction between these two operating systems is that the soft real time operating system can generally meet deadline whereas the hard real time operating system meets a deadline deterministic ally.
- For the scheduling purpose, some advance algorithms are used by these operating systems.
- Flexibility in scheduling has many advantages to offer such as the cso (computer system orchestration) of the process priorities becomes wider.
- But a typical real time OS dedicates itself to a small number of applications at a time.
- There are 2 key factors in any real –time OS namely:
  1. Minimal interrupt latency and
  2. Minimal thread switching latency.
- Two types of design philosophies are followed in designing the real  time Oss:
  1. Time sharing design: As per this design, the tasks are switched based up on a clocked interrupt and events at regular intervals. This is also termed as the round robin scheduling.
  2. Event – driven design: As per this design, the switching occurs only when some other event demands higher priority. This is why it is also termed as priority scheduling or preemptive priority.
- In the former designs, the tasks are switched more frequently than what is strictly required but it proves to be good at providing a smooth multi – tasking experience.
- This gives the user an illusion that he/ she is solely using the machine.
- The earlier designs of CPU forced us to have several cycles for switching a task and while switching it could not perform any other task.
- This was the reason why the early operating systems avoided unnecessary switching in order to save the CPU time.
- Typically, in any design there are 3 states of a task:
  1. Running or executing on CPU
  2. Ready to be executed
  3. Waiting or blocked for some event
- Many of the tasks are kept in the second and third states because at a time the CPU can perform only one task.
- The number of tasks waiting to be executed in the ready queue may vary depending on the running applications and the scheduler type being used by the CPU.
- On multi – tasking systems that are non – preemptive, one task might have to give up its CPU time to let the other tasks to be executed.
- This leads to a situation called the resource starvation i.e., the number of tasks to be executed is more and the resources are less.

What is meant by Quantum Cryptography?

The quantum mechanical effects when used for carrying out cryptography tasks are called the quantum cryptography. This technology is also used for breaking the cryptographic systems. And the quantum mechanical effects used include:
1. The quantum computation and
2. The quantum communication

Some very popular examples of uses of quantum cryptography are as follows:
1. For the secure exchange of the quantum key distribution or key
2. Use of quantum computers that used for breaking in to the systems using signature schemes such as ElGamal and RSA and public – key encryption.

The major advantage of quantum cryptography is that by using it, a number of cryptographic tasks are completed that are almost impossible to be completed through the classical communication i.e., the non – quantum effects.

Applications of Quantum Cryptography

1. Quantum key distribution:
- This is the most widely used application.
- It can be described as the use of quantum communication for establishing a key that is shared by two parties (usually referred to as ‘Alice’ and ‘bob’) without involvement of a third party (called Eve) knowing anything regarding the key, even if it eavesdrop on the communication between the two parties.
This happens as follows:
- The bits of the key are encoded by Alice as quantum data and are sent to Bob.
- Now if Eve eavesdrops, the message will be disturbed, making Alice and Bob know about it.
- Thus, we can say that this is a form of encrypted communication.
- Further, the QKD’s security is proven mathematically without restricting the eavesdropper’s abilities.
- In CKD (classical key distribution) this is not possible.
- This is commonly known as the ‘unconditional security’.
- However, the laws of quantum mechanics also apply and there is a need for Alice and Bob to authenticate each other. - It should not be possible for Eve to impersonate as Alice or Bob.
- This can lead to man – in – the – middle – attack.

2. Quantum commitment:
- This was another task that the researchers tried to achieve with the unconditional security offered by QKD.
- Quantum commitment is actually a scheme in which apart Alice can fix a certain value i.e., to commit where it cannot be changed by Alice anymore and it is ensured that Bob won’t learn anything about it, until and unless it is decided by Alice to be revealed to Bob.
- The most common use of these schemes is in the cryptographic protocols.
- Oblivious transfers can be performed by constructing an unconditionally secure protocol from a quantum channel and commitment.
- With such transfers any distributed computations can be implemented securely.

3. Bounded – and noisy – quantum – storage model (BQSM):
- This model provides a possible way for constructing quantum commitment and OTs that unconditionally secure.
- This model assumes that a known constant Q limits the amount of quantum data stored by an adversary.
- However, no limit is imposed up on the classical data.
Idea behind this model is:
- The number of quantum bits exchanged by the involving parties is more than Q.
- This amount of information cannot be stored even by a dishonest party since the memory limit of adversary if Q quantum bits.
- This will lead it to 2 options: either discard the data or measure it.
- So now the OTs can be implemented.
