What are uses of WiMax technology?

- The WiMax technology has been used since a long time to provide assistance to the communication process.
- This area has seen major deployment of wimax technology especially in Indonesia during the calamity of tsunami in the year of 2004. 
- The WiMax technology brought in the possibilities of providing broadband access that helped a big deal in regeneration of the communication. 
- The organizations such as FEMA and FCC (federal communications commission) felt the need of wimax in their communication process. 
- The WiMax applications with high efficiency are available today.
- It is known to offer a broad base for the customers and the services had been improved by adding mobility feature to them.

- The most important application of the WiMax technology is the range.
- This is so because using WiMax tower can be used as a means to connect with the other WiMax towers through line-of-sight communication which involves using microwave links. 
- This connectivity between two towers is called as backhaul.  
- It is capable of covering up to 3000 miles. 
- The WiMax network is even sufficient for covering remote and rural areas.


3. The nomadic broadband is another application of wimax technology which can be considered as an extended plan of wifi.
- The access points provided by WiMax technology might be less in number but they offer very high security.  
- Many companies use the WiMax base station for the development of the business.

What is WiMax technology?

Worldwide inter-operability for microwave access or wimax is standard developed for wireless communications that has been designed so as to deliver data rates of 30-40 mbps. The update in the technology in the year 2011 upgraded the technology to provide around 1 gbps for the stations that were fixed. 
- The Wimax forum is responsible for naming the technology as Wimax. 
- This forum was formed in the year of 2001 for the promotion of the inter-operability and conformity of this standard. 
- The Wimax has been defined by the forum as the technology based up on standards that enable the last mile wireless broadband delivery as alternative for the DSL and the cable thing. 
- The IEEE 802/ 16’s interoperability implementations are referred to as the WiMax. 
- The wimax forum has ratified this family of standards. 
- By virtue of the certification provided by this forum, the vendors are able to sell mobile and fixed products that are wimax certified. 
- This is done for ensuring that a level of inter-operability is maintained at par with the other products that have been also certified for the same profile. 
- The ‘fixed wimax’ is the name given to the original IEEE 802.16 standards.
- ‘Wifi on steroids’ is the term used to refer to WiMax sometimes. 

It has got a number of applications such as in:
Ø  Broadband connections
Ø  Cellular back-haul
Ø  Hot spots and so on.

- This technology shares some similarity with the Wifi technology however, this one is more capable of transmitting data at greater distances.
It is because of its range and bandwidth that the WiMax is suitable for the following applications:
Ø  Provides services such as the IPTV services and VoIP (telecommunications services).
Ø  Provides mobile broadband connectivity that is portable across the cities and countries and that can be accessed via different kinds of devices.
Ø  Provides an alternative for DSL and cable in the form of wireless last mile broadband access.
Ø  Acts as a source of internet connectivity.
Ø  Metering and smart grids.

- This technology can be used at home for providing internet access across the countries. 
- This has also caused a rise in the market competition. 
- The WiMax is even economically feasible. 
- Mobile wimax has been used as a replacement for the technologies like CDMA, GSM that are cellular phone technologies.  
- The technology has also been used as an overlay for increasing the capacity.  
The fixed wimax is now used for 2g, 3g and 4g networks as a wireless back-haul technology in almost all the nations whether they are developed or developing.  
- In some states of North America, this technology is provided through a numbered of copper wire line connections. 
- On the other hand, the technology is back hauled via satellites in case of the remote cellular operations.  
- While in other cases even microwave Links are used. 
- The bandwidth requirements of the WiMAX demand more substantial back-haul when compared to other legacy cellular applications. 
- In some of the cases, the sites have been aggregated by the operators by use of Wireless Technology.  
- The traffic is then introduced to the fiber networks as per the convenience.  
The technologies that provide triple play services are directed compatible with the WiMAX.

- The Intel Corporation has donated the hardware for WiMax technology for assisting the FCC (federal communications commission) and FEMA etc.
- The subscribers’ stations or SS are the devices which are used for connecting to a WiMAX Network. 
- These devices might be portable such as the following:

What is Wifi technology? How does it work?

- Wifi has emerged as a very popular technology. 
- This technology has enabled the electronic devices to exchange information between them and to share the internet connection without using any cables or wires. 
- It is a wireless technology. 
- This technology works with the help of the radio waves. 
- The Wifi is defined as a WLAN (wireless local area network) product by the wifi alliance that is based on the standards defined by IEEE (802.11 standards). 
Most of the WLANs are based upon these standards only and so this technology has been named as wifi which is the synonymous with the term WLAN. 
- The wifi-certified trademark might be used by only those wifi products which have the complete certification for the wifi alliance inter-operability. 
- A number of devices now use wifi such as the PCs, smart phones, video game consoles, digital cameras, digital audio players, tablet computers and so on. 
- All these devices can connect to the network and access internet by means of a wireless network access point. 
- Such an access point is more commonly known as a ‘hotspot’. 
- The range of an access point is up to 20 m. 
- But it has a much greater range outside.  
- An access point can be installed in a single room or in an area of many square miles. 
- This can be achieved by using a number of overlapping access points. 
However, the security of the wifi is less compared to the wired connections for example Internet.
- This is so because a physical connection is not required by an intruder. 
- The web pages using SSL have security but the intruders can easily access the non-encrypted files on the internet. 
- It is because of this, that the various encryption technologies have been adopted by the wifi. 
- The earlier WEP encryption was weak and so was easy to break.
- Later, came the higher quality protocols such as the WPA2 and WPA. 
- The WPS or the wifi protected set up was an optional feature that was added in the year of 2007. 
- This option a very serious flaw which is that it allowed the recovery of the password of the router by an attacker.
- The certification and the test plan has been updated by the wifi alliance for ensuring that there is resistance against attacks in all the devices that have been newly certified.
- For connecting to a wifi LAN, a wireless network interface controller has to be incorporated in to the computer system.
- This combination of the interface controller and the computer is often called as the station. 
- The same radio frequency communication channel is shared by all the stations.
- Also, all the stations receive any transmission on this channel. 
- Also, the user is not informed of the fact that the data was delivered to the recipient and so is termed as the ‘best–effort delivery mechanism’. 
- For transmitting the data packets, a carrier wave is used. 
- These data packets are commonly known as the ‘Ethernet frames’. 
Each station regularly tunes in to the radio frequency channel for picking up the transmissions that are available. 
- A device that is wifi enabled can connect to the network if it lies in the range of the wireless network. 
- One condition is that the network should have been configured for permitting such a connection. 
- For providing coverage in a large area multiple hotspots are required. 
- For example, wireless mesh networks in London. 
- Through wifi, services can be provided in independent businesses, private homes, public spaces, high street chains and so on. 
- These hotspots have been set up either commercially or free of charge. 
- Free hotspots are provided at hotels, restaurants and airports.

What are the security problems faced by a network?

Making mistakes concerning the network security is very common. The same mistakes are repeated again and again. These problems cannot be solved without changing our working methods. In this article we discuss about some common security problems that are faced by a network.

ØUsing weak and non-complex passwords for accessing the network: 
- Brute forcing is an old school exploit to which many of the system network administrators are open to. 
- The very famous captcha technology has been implemented for correcting this vulnerability of the network security passwords. 
- In the common captcha, the user is required to type in the digits or the letters that are displayed on the screen in some sort of distorted image. 
- This technology has been designed to prevent the network to be accessed by unwanted internet bots.
- However, this is not as safe as it looks. 
- It just gives a false sense to the network admins for countering the brute forcing. 
- Complex password is the solution for this problem. 
- For creating a complex password, more than seven characters need to be combined with special characters and numbers. 
- Apart from the creation of the complex passwords, a password expiration system has to be implemented. 
- This system is for reminding the users for changing their passwords. 
- Also, care should be taken regarding the reuse of the passwords. 
- Cycling of the passwords should not be allowed.

Ø Using server application or software that is outdated: 
- The patches are released by the companies from time to time for ensuring that the system does not become vulnerable to the various threats. 
- Also, new exploits and threats are posed by the hackers that can harm the network if the patches are not properly used. 
- For ensuring the network administrator is kept informed of the new threats, the software or the applications have to be updated regularly.  

Ø Web cookies: 
- Even though the viruses and malware cannot be introduced in to the network through cookies, these cookies can be tracked by some third party cookies for compiling the records of the browsing histories of the individuals. 
- The cookies that are not encrypted pose a major threat because they make the system vulnerable to the cross site scripting (XSS) attacks, thus putting your privacy at risk. 
- The open cookies can provide access to the cookies with the log-in data which can be used by hackers for intruding in to your systems. 
- The solution to this problem is to use the encrypted cookies along with an encoded expiration time. 
- The admins might ask the users to re-log-in before accessing important network directories.

Ø Plain hashes: 
- Hashing is the technique used for indexing and retrieval purposes in the database. 
- In most of the encryption algorithms, the plain hashes are mostly used. 
- A type of encryption is the salt that might be added to the hashes for making the creation of a look-up table that might assist the brute force or directory attacks extremely difficult or let’s say almost impractical. 
- But this works only when large salt is used. 
- Usually a pre-computed look up table might not be used by the attacker in exploitation of the network. 
- This makes the network security system even more complex.
- So even if the attacker is able to break into your system, he won’t be able to access the information from the database. 
- The encryption key should be kept hidden.

Ø Shared web hosting: 
- This service is used by the websites that reside on one same server. 
- Each site is given its own partition. 
- This is economically feasible for most of the systems. 
- But here if the attacker breaches in to system of one website, he can get into other website’s security systems too.

Explain the concept of inter-networking?

- The practice in which one computer network is connected with the other networks is called inter-networking. 
- The networks are connected with the help of gateways. 
- These gateways are used since they offer a common method for routing the data packets across the networks.
- The resulting system in which a number of networks are connected is called the inter-network or more commonly as the internet. 
- The terms “inter” and “networking” combine together to form the term “internet working”.  
- Internet is the best and the most popular example of the inter networking. 
Internet has formed as a result of many networks connected with the help of numerous technologies. 
- Many types of hardware technologies underlie the internet. 
- The internet protocol suite (IP suite) is the inter networking protocol standard responsible for unifying the diverse networks. 
- This protocol is more commonly known as the TCP/ IP. 
- Two computer local area networks (LANs) connected to one another by means of a router form the smallest internet but not the inter network. 
Inter networking is not formed by simply connecting two LANs together via a hub or a switch. 
- This is called expansion of the original local area network. 
Inter networking was started as a means for connecting the disparate networking technologies. 
- Eventually, it gained widespread popularity because of the development needs of connecting many local area networks together through some kind of WAN (wide area network). 
- “Catenet” was the original term that was used for the inter network. 
Inter network includes many types of other networks such as the PAN or personal area network. 
- Gateways were the network elements that were originally used for connecting various networks in predecessor of the internet called the ARPANET. 
Today, these connecting devices are more commonly known as the internet routers. 
- There is a type of interconnection between the various networks at the link layer of the networking model. 
- This layer is particularly known as the hardware centric layer and it lies below the TCP/ IP logical interfaces level. 

Two devices are mainly used in establishing this interconnection:
Ø  Network switches and
Ø  Network bridges
- Even now this cannot be called as inter networking rather, the system is just a single and large sub-network. 
- Further, for traversing these devices no inter networking protocol is required. 
However, it is possible to convert a single network in to an inter network. 
- This can be done by making various segments out of the network and also making logical divisions of the segment traffic using the routers. 
- The internet protocol suite has been particularly designed for providing a packet service. 
- This packet service offered by the IPS is quite unreliable. 
- The elements that maintain a network state and are intermediate in the network are avoided by the architecture. 
- The focus of the architecture is more on the end points of the active communication session.
- For a reliable transfer of the data, a proper transport layer protocol must be used by the applications. 
- One such protocol is the TCP (transmission control protocol) and it is capable of providing a reliable stream for communication. 
- Sometimes a simpler protocol such as the UDP (user datagram protocol) might be used by the applications. 
- The applications using this protocol carry out only those tasks for which reliable data delivery is not required or for which realtime is required. 

Examples of such tasks include voice chat or watching a video online etc. Inter networking uses two architectural models namely:

  1. OSI or the open system interconnection model: This model comes with 7 layer architecture that covers the hardware and the software interface.
  2. TCP/ IP model: The architecture of this model is somewhat loosely defined when compared with the OSI model.

Differentiate between persistent and non-persistent CSMA?

- CSMA or Carrier Sense Multiple Access makes use of LBT or listen before technique before making any transmission. 
- It senses the channel for its status and if found free or idle, the data frames are transmitted otherwise the transmission is deferred till the channel becomes idle again. 
- In simple words, we can say that CSMA is an analogy to human behavior of not interrupting others when busy. 
- There are number of protocols out which the persistent and the non – persistent are the major ones. 
- CSMA is based on the idea that if the state of the channel can be listened or sensed prior to transmitting a packet, better throughput can be achieved.
- Also, using this methodology a number of collisions can be avoided. 
- However, it is necessary to make the following assumptions in CSMA technology:
  1. The length of the packets is constant.
  2. The errors can only be caused by collisions except which there are no errors.
  3. Capture effect is absent.
  4. The transmissions made by all the other hosts can be sensed by each of the hosts.
  5. The transmission time is always greater than the propagation delay.
About Persistent CSMA
- This protocol first senses the transmission channel and acts accordingly. 
- If the channel is found to be occupied by some other transmission, it keeps listening or sensing the channel and as soon as the channel becomes free or idle, starts its transmission. 
- On the other hand, if the channel is found empty, then it does not wait and starts transmitting immediately. 
- There are possibilities of collisions. 
- If one occurs, the transmitter must wait for random time duration and start again with the transmission. 
- It has a type called 1 – persistent protocol which makes transmission of probability 1 whenever the channel is idle. 
- In persistent CSMA there are possibilities of occurrence of collisions even if the propagation delay is 0. 
- However, collisions can only be avoided if the stations do not act so greedy. 
We can say that this CSMA protocol is aggressive and selfish. 
- There is another type of this protocol called the P – persistent CSMA. 
This is the most optimal strategy. 
- Here the channels are assumed to be slotted where one slot equals the period of contention i.e., 1 RTT delay. 
- The protocol has been named so because it transmits the packet with probability p if the channel is idle otherwise it waits for one slot and then transmits.

About Non–Persistent CSMA
- It is deferential and less aggressive when compared to its persistent counterpart. 
- It senses the channel and if it is busy it just waits and then again after sometime senses the channel unlike persistent CSMA which keeps on sensing the channel continuously. 
- As and when the channel is found free, the data packet is transmitted immediately. 
- If there occurs a collision it waits and starts again.
- In this protocol, even if the two stations become greedy in midst of transmission of some other station they do not collide probably whereas, in persistent CSMA they collide.
- Also, if only one of the stations become greedy in midst of some other transmission in progress, it has no choice but to wait. 
- In persistent CSMA this greedy stations takes over the channel up on completion of the current transmission.
Using non – persistent CSMA can reduce the number of collisions whereas persistent CSMA only increases the risk. 
- But the non – persistent CSMA is less efficient when compared to the persistent CSMA.
- Efficiency lies in the ability of the protocols of detecting the collisions before starting the transmission.

Frame relay and leased phone lines are two of the physical connection media for setting up the connections. 

Advantages of Frame Relay over Leased Phone Line
- Frame relay is a kind of the standardized WAN (wide area network) technology for specifying the logical link as well as physical link layers of the digital telecommunication channels. 
- It is done by the means of a packet switching methodology.
- The frame relay technology has been designed for transportation across the ISDN (integrated services digital network) infrastructure. 
- Today, it is used in the context of a number of network interfaces. 
- Frame relays are commonly implemented for VoFR (voice over frame relay).  - It is used as an encapsulation technique for the data. 
- The frame relays are used between the WANs and the LANS.
- A private line or a leased line is provided to the user that connects to the frame relay node. 
- The frequently changing path is transparent to the WAN protocols used extensively by the end users. 
- Data is transmitted via these networks and the frame relay network handles all this.
- One advantage of the frame relays over the leased lines is that they are less expensive and this is what that makes the frame relays so popular in the telecommunications industry.
- Another advantage of the frame relays over the leased lines that make them popular is that they have user equipment that can be configured with extreme simplicity in the frame relay network. 
- The usage of the Ethernet over the fiber optics communication is high. 
- This has led to using the frame relay protocol and encapsulation by the dedicated broadband services like DSL and cable modem, VPN, MPLS etc. 
- However, there are a number of rural regions in India where there is still an absence of the cable modem and DSL services.
- In such areas, the only option for the non-dial-up connection is the frame relay line of 64 Kbit/ s.
- Thus, it might be used by some retail chain to connect with the WAN of their corporate. 
- The aim of the designers of the frame relay is to offer a telecommunication service for transmitting the cost efficient data between the various end points in the WAN and the local area networks in an intermittent traffic. 
- The data is put in to units of variable sizes called the frames by the frame relay process. 
- The required error correction process is left up to the end points. 
- This error correction includes re-transmission of the data. 
- This increases the speed of the overall transmission of data. 
- A PVC or the permanent virtual circuit is provided by the network so that when a customer looks at a dedicated connection and not having to pay for leased line that is full time engaged. 
- The route by which each frame travels to the destined end point is figured out by the service provider and thus he decides the charges based up on the usage. 
- A level of the service quality can be selected by the enterprise. 
- The frames can be prioritized while the importance of the other frames is reduced. 
- The frame relay can run on systems such as the following:
Ø  Fractional T – 1
Ø  Full T – carrier

- A frame relay provides mid-range services between ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and the ISDN operating at a speed of 128 Kbps. 
- Not only it provides the services, it also complements them. 
- The base of the frame relay technology is provided by the X.25 packet switching that has been designed for data transmission over the analog voice lines.

What is meant by Time sharing system?


In the field of computer science, sharing resources of a computer through techniques of multi-tasking and multi-programming by many other system users is termed as a time sharing system. 
- It was first introduced in the year of 1960 and eventually emerged as the most popular computing model of the 1970s. 
- With it, occurred a major shift in the technology of designing the efficient computers. 
- These types of systems allowed quite a large number of users for interacting with the same computer system at the same time. 
- Providing computing capabilities was a costly affair at that time. 
- Time sharing greatly brought down this cost by providing these capabilities at a very less cost. 
- Since time sharing allows multiple users to interact simultaneously with the same system, it has actually made it possible for the organizations and the individuals to use a system that they do not even own. 
- This has further led to the promotion of the computers to be used interactively and development of other applications with an interactive interface. 
- The earlier systems apart from being expensive were quite slow. 
- This was the reason why the systems could be dedicated only to one task at a time. 
- The task was carried out through the control panels from where the operator would enter small programs manually through switches so as to load and execute a new program series. 
- These programs would take even up to weeks for completing execution. 
- The realization of the interaction pattern was what that led to the development of time sharing systems. 
- Usually, the data entered by a single user was in small bursts of info and then a long pause. 
- But if there would have been multiple number of users working concurrently on the same system, there activities could fill up the pauses of the single user. 
The overall process could be made very efficient for a given size of the use group. 
- In the same way, the slice or share of time that was engaged in waiting for network input or tape or disk could be utilized by activities of other users. 
- A system that would be able to harness this potential advantage was difficult to be implemented.
- Even though batch processing was a high at that time, it could only make use of the time delay between two programs. 
- In the early times, the multiplexing of computer terminals in to main frame computer systems was seen.
- Such implementations were capable of sequentially polling those terminals to check for additional action and data requests made by the user of the system.

- Later, came the interconnection technology that was interrupt driven and made use of the IEEE 488 i.e., parallel data transfer technologies.
- Time sharing faded for some time with the advent of the micro computing but again it came back in to the scene with the rise of internet. 
- The corporate server farms cost in millions and are capable of hosting a large number of customers sharing the same resources.
- The operation of the websites using the early serial terminals was in bursts of activity that were followed by idle periods. 
- However, it is because of this bursting that the services of the web sites could be used by a large number of users simultaneously and with the advantage that the delays in communications won’t be noticed by them.
- However, if the server gets too damn busy they will surely start coming in to the notice.
- Earlier some time sharing services such as the service bureaus were offered by many companies. 
- Some examples of common systems that are used for time sharing are:
  1. SDS 940
  2. PDP – 10
  3. IBM 360
